Naturally, the vehicle must be cared for in compliance with the manufacturer’s operating instructions. The internal body sections and panels are covered against rusting through from the inside for 12 years. This is from VW’s current Golf brochure, although I think the wording has been pretty much unchanged for many years However, if these ‘down to the bare metal’ stone chips are left unattended and not touched in then they can quite quickly corrode. Some small stone chips can be difficult to see and owners may not even be unaware of them, especially if they leave the cleaning of their car to others. VW don’t cover paintwork or corrosion damage resulting from an external influence as they’ll say it’s something they have no control over. a stone chip that removes the paint and primer leaving bare metal exposed. Cover is limited to though-rusting from the inside of panels to the outside and not surface corrosion which is normally caused by an ‘external influence’ - e.g. Unfortunately VW’s anti corrosion warranty doesn’t cover all types of corrosion. It’s a manual three door and as you know, they don’t make those anymore. I’m not too worried about the cost as I plan to keep the car long term. I had one whole side done which wasn’t noticeable although you could feel it had been done when feeling the paint inside the door. Some years ago I had a Mk 4 which was keyed. I’m worried about how noticeable this will be, especially the passenger door. Obviously it’s cheaper to have both done at the same time. It looks like someone put their studs up against the door. I also have an issue on the passenger door with scratches I acquired at my son’s football match. The paint guy’s response was ‘looks like rust to me’!Īnyway, I’m going to have to do something but a little nervous about having new paint. I took the car to a local paint guy who was recommended by a detailed. I had a go at VW over twitter and they got in touch but they wouldn’t honour the warranty. Of course it didn’t as I was told it wasn’t corrosion. I took it to my local dealer for evaluation, they took paint depth and photos and told me that they were 99% sure that it would go through as a warranty job. A few months back I discovered a small paint blister on the driver’s rear wheel arch. I’m hoping to get some reassurance about having some paint fixed.
